Overview

The Dornier 228 is a twin turboprop STOL aircraft that can carry up to 19 passengers and is capable of operating from rough runways and in hot climates. It is powered by a pair of Garrett TPE331 turboprop engines and has a supercritical wing that generates large amounts of lift at slow speeds.

In the 1970s, Dornier developed an aerofoil wing and tested it on a modified Do 28D-2 Skyservant, powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-110 turboprop engines. The aircraft was then re-engined with two Garrett AiResearch TPE-331-5S and named Dornier 128.

The company developed a new fuselage in 15 and 19 passenger variants; the Dornier 228-100 and Dornier 228-200, and these went on show at the ILA Berlin Air Show in 1980. The prototypes were first flown on 28 March, 1981 and 9 May, 1981 respectively. German certification was granted on 18 December, 1981 and the first Dornier 228-100 entered service in July 1982. FAA certification followed on 17 April 1984 and that of EASA one month later.

In 1983, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) bought a production licence and two years later commenced aircraft manufacture in India.

Dornier offered the 228 in upgraded variants and fitted with optional equipment for performing various special missions. In 1996, it was announced that all manufacturing operations would be transferred to India.

RUAG acquired the Dornier 228 type certificate in 2003, and in 2009 started building a Dornier 228 New Generation: the fuselage, wings and tail unit manufactured by HAL and transported to Oberpfaffenhofen in Germany for final assembly. The Dornier 228NG has the same airframe with a new five blade composite propeller, an advanced glass cockpit and more powerful Garrett TPE331-10 engines. EASA granted the airworthiness certificate on 18 August, 2010 and the first delivery was made in September 2010.

Towards the end of 2020, RUAG sold the Dornier 228 programme to General Atomics.
